Of all the weddings I have attended, only two couples have subsequently divorced.
Most of those weddings took place after the couple had been together many many years, if not decades. And of my friends and acquaintances who were married when I met them, only one couple has since unhitched.
Very few of my married friends are of a religious bent. On any given Sunday, most everyone I know is free for brunch, if you see what I mean. Church going is not a habit for us. Religion has little to do with our degrees of commitment.
I think what helps us hang together, to a large degree, is the greater community we’ve developed around ourselves. And our senses of humor. Nobody takes themselves seriously, ever. We see and laugh at our foibles, and are annoyingly self-aware. We muddle through, knowing that we are not perfect and that there is no one right way to do anything.
I am moved to muse on this because we have a couple of weddings to attend in the near future, which brings me great gleeful happiness. Like Shelly Tambo, I, too am a huge fan of weddings.
