Last night I had an interesting version of the classic “trying to scream but can’t make a sound” dream. In this version, I initially could scream (because a feral dog was attacking Dudley, my family’s beloved, now-deceased Welsh Corgi), but because I had to continue for so long, as noone was responding, that I became hoarse and then voiceless.
When I woke up this morning, my throat was sore, and my voice raspy.
The cats, deployed about me on the comforter, did not seem alarmed in any way (except by the fact of my insisting that they let me out from under the covers) so I don’t think I screamed aloud.
So which came first? Scratchy, raw voice, or scary dream?
Maybe what you perceive to be the dream was real and you are now in a dream state?
I had a similar experience a couple of nights ago. I dreamed that I was pedaling a bicycle pulling a wagon; I entered a freeway and tried get up to speed, pedaling furiously away, and realized that I was doing it for real in my bed. Fortunately I stopped before I wakened Jouette with my activity. She probably would have freaked out. Weird.
But did the cats freak out?
